How to prepare instruments for calibration
Complete information and suitable packing reduce clarification delays, protect equipment in transit and help the laboratory select points and methods that represent actual use.
Information to provide
Identify the brand, model, serial number, range, resolution, critical operating points, quantity and required return date. Include acceptance criteria when a conformity statement is needed.
- State whether as-found results are required
- List points and units clearly
- Confirm laboratory or on-site service
- Include prior certificates when trend review is useful
Condition and packing checks
Clean the exterior and check power, batteries, display, connectors and model-specific accessories without adjusting the instrument when as-found evidence is required.
- Secure moving parts as instructed by the manufacturer
- Protect probes, dials and connections from impact
- Include required power supplies, cables or software
- Declare hazardous media or contamination
FAQ
Must every accessory and manual be sent?
Send items needed to operate or connect the instrument, especially proprietary adapters, probes, cables and instructions for model-specific procedures. Confirm the list before shipping.
Should the instrument be adjusted before calibration?
Not when its incoming condition must be known. Request as-found results and authorize adjustment separately so prior measurement impact can be assessed.
